Re-membering Touch
We live in a completely dismembered society.
Humans live side by side, stacked like folders in paper cabinets,
shoulder to shoulder, but we never look up.
We are so dismembered,
we don’t hold each other like we used to.
We don’t co-regulate like all other animals do
Bears do it without thinking—
they nap belly to belly,
fur against fur,
breath syncing through the dark.
Wolves do it by howling,
their voices harmonizing
until the forest hums deep with belonging.
Dolphins do it in the waves,
gliding side by side,
skin brushing skin,
Otters float hand in hand,
eyes closed,
trusting the water to carry their sleep.
Even trees do it,
their roots intertwined underground,
whispering prayers and safety
through soil and time.
Every creature on Earth remembers
what we’ve forgotten—
that regulation
is not a self thing.
It’s a together thing.
A remembering thing.
Sometimes I wonder
what the world would look like
if we started picking up all the pieces
that came apart
when our collective was dis-membered.
What happens when the world starts re-membering
Re-membering that our bodies know how to heal.
Re-membering that this is our one wild, beautiful life.
Re-membering that the earth still holds us like a mother.
Re-membering that we are meant to hold each other too.
In this way, re-membrance isn’t just a memory,
but an action—
a weaving back together
of the broken pieces
our screens cracked apart.
When was the last time Someone other than a lover caressed your eyebrows, massaged your temples, kissed your forehead
co regulation isn’t
limited to lovers
and mothers,
Friends and even stranges.
have the capacity to
Co-regulate. Through Breath.
Through Loving presence.
So before the sun sets tonight,
sing with a friend,
dance with a stranger,
breath with yourself.
Lay your heart beside another heartbeat.
And allow yourself to re-member the magic that has always been available for us. But they wanted us to forget. The magic you reclaim every time you re-member.
